The usual illustration of the word courage includes someone who has put him or herself in peril for the sake of other, often a soldier who has faced danger on the battlefield. But there are many possible variations on the concept. Since 2011, over one-hundred Buddhist monks have protested against the Chinese occupation of Tibet by self-immolation. Are these public suicides examples of courage?
