WHO & WHY

Artists, Kristin Llamas and Alfonso Llamas are working to promote, engage and inspire the visual arts within Music City. Their slogan is “The World Hears Nashville, Now They SEE us.” This project, in partnership with the Tennessee State Museum furthers their mission to inspire and be inspired by visual art. It is an official INSIDE OUT by JR global art project and will be documented and shared with the world…we are bringing the world in, while sending Nashville around the globe.

Other INSIDE OUT projects around the world have created a beautiful impact, but Nashville’s trasformation is the first of its kind. These sculptural lanterns create a light box effect directly down the city street. This is Photography + Street Art at its core!

New work by Nashville artist, Kristin Llamas.

“Our Time,” features the ten newest paintings by Kristin Llamas, debuting works such as “Raising Paper Dolls” and “Remnants of Home.” This is the last exhibition of new work that Kristin Llamas will exhibit before her Fall of 2013 solo show at the Parthenon Museum.

In this exhibit, the viewer will experience abstract texture and layers of realism along with Llamas’ signature style of piecing the canvas. Themes address the artist’s views on the state of American society surrounding: child-rearing (in Raising Paper Dolls), work ethic (Join Me for Tea), the ominous state of our economy (When Good Things End) and the quest for calm amongst chaos (Remnants of Home).

Llamas states, “This exhibit exposes a longing peace amongst a subtle but unsettling feeling. That feeling may be the boiling of change to come, or just the acceptance of what currently is. It is a place of ominous peace. It is a place of insecurity and fear, as well as comfort and anticipation. It is ‘Our Time.’”

In ancient Greece, symposia were eating and drinking parties, where men gathered to discuss
current ideas and philosophy, listen to poetry and music, and participate in competitive
entertainments. During the classical period, large philosophical questions were mulled over with
philosophers such as Socrates (460-399 BCE). This vital contributor to western thought once
said, “The unexamined life is not worth living.” His method of examining important questions
was to answer a question with another question, forcing his students to think thoroughly about a
topic. His student Plato wrote about Socrates’ method in the Socratic Dialogues.

In a modern twist, the Parthenon Museum and artist Kristin Llamas are revisiting these
discussions to prepare for Llamas’ 2013 exhibit at the Parthenon. Small groups are invited to
gather in a series of evenings at various locations across the city to examine large concepts
common to people everywhere. Each evening meeting will consist of an hour and a half
of moderated discussion on a single topic; Llamas will then create a painting based on that
symposium.

Each group is limited to 12 people and an RSVP is required. For more information or
to sign up for one of the meetings, please contact Parthenon Curator Susan Shockley
(susan.shockley@nashville.gov) or artist Kristin Llamas (kristinllamas@gmail.com, using the

Alfonso & Kristin Llamas

ABOUT The Nomadic Project Documentary:

The Nomadic Project began when an artist and musician envisioned America united by Art. Fast-forward to the 5 yr anniversary and we need your help to make the documentary!

WHY?

Inspiration:

Every generation spends less and less time exploring, creating and interacting, leaving us with an unexplainable emptiness. It is sad, really…that the more that is available to us, the less we feel satisfied. So this is our chance to encourage America (and the world) to get out and be inspired! We have over 180 hours of film, thousands of photos and the personal journals that were created on this journey (not to mention the original art and music). But it will take a village (or nation) to fund the documentary.

Art:

The Nomadic Project took place right as the economy took a nose dive. A lot of the galleries involved ended up closing shortly after. These amazing spaces were undervalued within their own communities. We want to draw attention to the day to day importance of creativity and art in our lives. We have become so overstimulated by information and images that we’ve lost touch with the spiritual connection to raw materials.

Environment:

We are all becoming quickly aware of the importance in preserving our landscape. Across 50 states, we were exposed to natural environments that were no more natural than a commercialized theme park. We also discovered hidden treasures. These gems, untouched by man’s greed to turn a profit, left us humbled and awe-stricken. We spoke with everyone from government employees to native tribes. We walked through ancient Anasazi ruins and modern museums. Explored desolate small town Main Streets to bustling turnpikes of New York. But down to it’s purest form, we were struck with the beauty, diversity and history of this land. The land was here long before we called it “America,” and it has a story that can only be whispered to those who are willing to listen.

WHAT?

For 13 months, one musician and one artist (that’s us) traveled to all 50 states. We did it without payment or promise of success. The only motivation leading us was our passion to physically and symbolically heal a divided nation. We self-funded the entire journey by selling everything of value, including our house. Our home became a converted Honda Element. It was packed with a tent, a week’s worth of clothes, portable refrigerator, a camp stove, laptop, easel and blank canvases. With an atlas in hand and no set route, we set off to spend about one week in each of the fifty states and join them together with nothing more than paint and song. What we didn’t realize was that the desire to inspire OUR world quickly evolved into a desire to inspire THE world. We experienced an America that you don’t hear about in the news or read about in history books. This documentary is our story of YOUR America.

HOW?

We need to raise a minimum of $20k to share the vision, inspiration and beauty that we found within this nation. We will include up to date interviews with those who were a part of the project and beyond. From signed maps and brochures from the trip, to actual pages from my journal, albums, and original art….every item you buy goes towards making this documentary possible. With your investment we can inspire today and tomorrow’s generations! Visit www.Nomadic-Project.com to see the book, art or CD’s that are for sale.

June 2011 – Lullaby and Awake Exhibition: JCC Gallery, Nashville TN

JUNE 2011

Artist Reception, June 2nd 7-9p

Gordon JCC Nashville

801 Percy Warner Boulevard
Nashville, TN 37205
(615) 356-7170

The series, Lullaby and Awake, by artist Kristin Llamas is more than just child’s play. It is a story that releases the lullabies within us. The journey begins at our roots. It taps into the subconscious, revealing hidden, inner truths. Real children and real adults inspire the work. Enjoy the process of finding your lullaby and discovering your “awakening.”

Details

On exhibit for the month of June 2011 at the GJCC Gallery in Nashville is a show that takes us back to our beginnings. Artist Kristin Llamas depicts traditional lullabies through paint and patch-worked canvas. The exhibit is meant to tap into the subconscious and reveal our most hidden, inner truths. It returns viewers to their core, back when the world faded away with the humble hum of a lullaby. Both children and adults alike inspire the work in this show. For Kristin, it stems from a comforting attachment to the lullaby her mother used to sing “Hush Little Baby,” which she now passes to her own children.

Llamas begins her paintings by tearing apart, then sewing together the canvas. Each piece is then layered with dripping color, mirrored-writing, sketches and delicately painted images. Llamas’ work will remain on display at the GJCC Gallery for the entire month of June, with an artist reception June 2nd from 7-9p.

For more information please contact Carrie Mills at carrie@nasvhillejcc.org or Kristin Llamas at kristinllamas@gmail.com or visit www.KLlamas.com.

In Memory of Norma Fischer

Last year at this time, Llamas’ grandmother, Norma Fisher attended her exhibit at the GJCC art gallery. It was the first time Norma visited the artist in Nashville, and the only time that she was able to view one of her grand-daughters exhibits in person. A week before the hanging of this show, Norma passed away suddenly. Kristin now shares her work once again at the GJCC in Nashville in honor of her beloved grandmother. The theme, returning to one’s roots becomes a poetic memorial to those loved and those lost.

2013- Parthenon Museum, Nashville, TN

Kristin Llamas: The Socratic Dialogues, Search for Areté
October 19, 2013-February 8, 2014

The Parthenon Museum

Socrates didn’t give us answers. He gave us questions. His questions were geared toward finding the path to excellence (or areté). Those questions remain unanswered as we continue the search for a life of courage, beauty, honor, temperance, justice, holiness, truth, wisdom, unity, and virtue.

What is Unity? What is holiness? What is temperance? What is courage? What is beauty? What is wisdom? What is Honor? What is justice? What is Truth? What is Virtue?

This exhibit is inspired by actual dialogues similar to those held by the ancient philosophers who gathered at the acropolis on the steps of the Greek Parthenon. In the summer of 2012, AK Llamas and Susan Shockley hosted ten “Socratic Dialogues” throughout the Nashville area. During each dialogue, Kristin Llamas remained silent while the group probed a single question presented. The questions are those above and were discussed in Socrates dialectic method for reflection and response. The goal was to create a casual environment over food and drink just as they did in Socrates time. Philosophical dialogues were often seen as a type of word game or source of entertainment (see Plato’s Symposium). Discussion often took place during parties and Socrates method of elenchus is similar to a game of twenty questions. Here, we represent the application of ancient Greek philosophy in modern day culture.

In response to these dialogues, 10 new works are being created by K. Llamas for debut at the Parthenon Museum during a 16 week exhibition. The work will address the community response to the above questions and depict symbolism relating to current events and/or cultural issues. Actual quotes from the dialogues may even appear throughout the canvases. Viewers are invited to reflect, interpret and respond to the significance of each image in relation to the question that inspired it.

Our goal is to encourage, challenge and inspire one another to discover our own personal path to excellence (or areté). We hope that you will join us in this journey and invite you to sign up for the mailing list below to be invited to upcoming dialogues and events.

See you at the show,

K. Llamas
